AGCO Fines Great Canadian Entertainment for Allowing Minors to Gamble
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has announced that it has imposed a hefty fine of CAD 151,000 ($108,542) on Great Canadian Entertainment for alleged violations at three of its casinos. This significant penalty comes after the casino company reportedly failed to prevent minors from engaging in online gambling activities.
Minors Access Gambling Facilities
Following an investigation by the AGCO, it was found that on four separate occasions, minors were able to access and gamble at Great Canadian Entertainment’s casinos in the Toronto area. The properties involved in the alleged violations include Casino Ajax, Pickering Casino Resort, and Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto.
Of the four reported incidents, two occurred at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, while the remaining two properties each had one violation, according to AGCO findings.
AGCO’s Commitment to Responsible Gambling
The AGCO emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards among Ontario’s gaming operators and reaffirmed its dedication to minimizing the negative impact of online gambling. According to the regulatory standards, operators must ensure that only individuals of legal age are permitted to enter casinos and participate in gambling activities.
As part of these standards, casino employees must possess the necessary skills, training, and experience to effectively carry out their responsibilities, such as verifying the identity and age of visitors and preventing underage and self-excluded individuals from gambling.
Details of the Fines
The AGCO imposed fines on each of the three casinos operated by Great Canadian Entertainment. Casino Ajax and Pickering Casino Resort both received penalties of CAD 50,000 ($35,941) for violating specific sections of the Registrar Standards. On the other hand, Great Canadian Casino Resort faced a slightly larger fine of CAD 51,000 ($36,660) for two violations of the same standards.
Under Ontario regulations, Great Canadian Entertainment has the option to appeal the monetary penalty to the Licence Appeal Tribunal (LAT), an independent adjudicative body separate from the AGCO.
AGCO’s CEO Addresses the Issue
Dr. Karin Schnarr, CEO and registrar of AGCO, emphasized the obligation of Ontario’s casino operators to prevent underage gambling. She stated that operators must ensure that minors are not able to access casino floors or engage in gambling activities like slot machines or table games.
Dr. Schnarr reiterated the AGCO’s commitment to monitoring all casino operators and holding them accountable for fulfilling their responsibility in preventing underage gambling.
The announcement of the fines against Great Canadian Entertainment follows a recent settlement reached by the AGCO with Woodbine Entertainment related to previous horse-related incidents.
