Baylor University Athletics Staffer Faces Consequences for Online Gambling
A former Baylor University athletics staffer is facing serious consequences after it was discovered that he placed thousands of bets over a six-year period, some of which involved Baylor games. Sam Hancock, who previously served as the school’s director of resource development, has received a two-year show-cause penalty from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) for a “significant conflict of interest” related to his betting activities.
Violation of NCAA Rules
According to the NCAA, Hancock placed approximately 2,950 bets totaling around $45,979 on three daily fantasy sports (DFS) platforms between July 2019 and September 2024. This included 113 wagers on Baylor games. The NCAA’s report stated that Hancock violated the principles of honesty and sportsmanship by knowingly participating in sports betting activities despite receiving rules education from the University.
While the infractions did not amount to major violations like insider betting or tampering with game outcomes, the volume and nature of the bets raised concerns, especially since some involved Baylor athletes. The NCAA did not disclose the names of the DFS platforms used or provide specific details about the bets made by Hancock.
Sanctions and Counseling
As part of the show-cause order, Hancock is required to attend gambling counseling and pay for his own attendance at the NCAA’s Regional Rules Seminars. He must also serve a two-week suspension from his current role and is prohibited from interacting with college athletes or athletics staff during that period.
Hancock, who currently holds a leadership role in the Wichita State University athletics department, has served in various positions at Baylor University and as a College Ambassador for the Dallas Mavericks.
