Melco International Development Ltd Obtains 20-Year License for Sri Lanka’s First Casino
Melco International Development Ltd, a Hong Kong-listed company, recently announced that it has secured a license to operate a gaming venue in Sri Lanka for the next 20 years. The license, which is backdated and effective from April 1, 2024, will remain valid until April 1, 2044.
City of Dreams Sri Lanka Casino Development
The company is currently in the process of developing the City of Dreams Sri Lanka casino, expected to be launched soon, potentially in the third quarter of this year. Operations of the casino will be managed by a designated unit of Melco Resorts, Bluehaven Services (Private) Ltd, a fully owned subsidiary of the company.
The development of the City of Dreams Sri Lanka project has incurred a total cost of $1 billion and was established in collaboration with John Keells Holdings Plc, a leading real estate developer in Sri Lanka. The company stated in a filing that the casino is set to begin operations in the third quarter of 2025.
Strategic Expansion and Growth Opportunities
Melco aims to enhance its global presence through the introduction of the Sri Lanka casino project, leveraging its brand name in the region to boost local tourism and benefit from its commercial casino operations in emerging markets. The company plans to take an asset-light approach to global expansion, actively seeking opportunities in emerging gaming markets.
The City of Dreams Sri Lanka will be the country’s first integrated resort, featuring 800 hotel rooms, a variety of dining options, conference and meeting spaces, and more. Melco will oversee the top five floors of the hotel property under the Nuwa brand, which includes 113 luxury rooms, while a separate entity will manage the remaining 687 hotel rooms.
