MGM Resorts International Increases Investment in Osaka Integrated Resort by 20%
MGM Resorts International has recently announced a 20% increase in its projected investment in the integrated resort in Osaka, Japan. Despite this decision, the company remains highly optimistic about the potential success of the property.
Reasons for the Increased Investment
The decision to increase the investment from $2.5 billion to $3 billion comes after finalizing certain contracts with partners. During a recent earnings call, MGM executives revealed that the updated spending estimates led to the decision to raise the investment.
MGM is confident that the $9 billion property will generate around $2 billion in annual EBITDA, leading to a double-digit returns percentage. The company believes that the success of the finished resort could surpass that of competitor Las Vegas Sands’ iconic Marina Bay Sands property in Singapore.
Jonathan Halkyard, MGM’s chief financial officer, explained that the increased investment was a result of updated spending estimates during final negotiations with contractors.
Financial Commitment and Ownership
Most of MGM’s financial commitment, amounting to $2.75 billion, will secure a 42.5% ownership stake in the property, as per the agreement with local partner ORIX. ORIX will also contribute a similar amount for the same stake. The remaining 15% ownership will be divided among smaller partners of the initiative, including Kansai Electric, Panasonic, and West Japan Railway.
CEO’s Positive Outlook and Forward Plans
CEO Bill Hornbuckle expressed confidence in the project, stating that MGM Osaka could potentially surpass Marina Bay Sands. He mentioned that the project is already fully designed, reducing the likelihood of major cost changes.
Hornbuckle also highlighted that MGM has hedged over 50% of its commitment in the forward yen market to ensure favorable exchange rates. Despite possible variability in input costs, MGM is focused on finishing the integrated resort on time. The property, which recently had its groundbreaking ceremony, is scheduled to open in 2030.
With a keen eye on being cost-efficient during construction, Hornbuckle emphasized the importance of working closely with partners to ensure the success of the project.
