Only 27% of individuals aged 18-29 considered a Swedish license when selecting a gambling platform, compared to over half of those aged 65 and above who deemed it crucial.

Interestingly, the study showed a noticeable shift in the importance placed on a local license when choosing a gambling site, with 42% of participants emphasizing its significance, a notable increase from the previous year’s 28%. However, opinions were divided on whether playing on a licensed platform offered real benefits, with 47% believing it did, while an equal number remained uncertain.

Concerns Over Safety and Tax Evasion

One of the primary reasons cited by individuals for avoiding unlicensed gambling sites was the fear of not being paid, as well as concerns regarding data privacy. A smaller percentage mentioned the increased risk of developing gambling problems on such platforms. Surprisingly, 8% of respondents admitted to using unlicensed sites to evade taxes on their winnings.

Industry Calls for Government Support

Gustaf Hoffstedt, the head of the Swedish gambling trade group BOS, has urged the government to provide more assistance to licensed operators in the face of market challenges. Hoffstedt emphasized the need for regulators and gambling companies to better communicate the safety and advantages of playing within the legal framework. He also proposed the implementation of a special stamp for approved sites, although this idea was met with skepticism due to concerns about counterfeit sites.

Simultaneously, the Swedish government has initiated a regulatory review to strengthen laws against unlicensed operators following a decline in the channelization rate – the percentage of gamblers using licensed platforms. Horseracing operator ATG reported channelization rates ranging from 69% to 82%, falling below the 90% target set by authorities.
