UKGC Embraces OSR Findings on Great Britain’s Gambling Survey
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) has received positive feedback from the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) regarding the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB). In response, the regulatory body has pledged to implement new initiatives in line with the OSR’s recommendations.
OSR Review of GSGB
The Office for Statistics Regulation conducted a thorough review of the GSGB and commended its transparency while also suggesting ways to enhance its reliability further. The GSGB, based on official UKGC statistics on gambling behaviors, represents the regulator’s commitment to transparency within the industry. After years of development, the UKGC sought the OSR’s evaluation against the Code of Practice for Statistics standards.
The OSR highlighted the lack of an official statistics accreditation, but affirmed that this did not compromise the quality or reliability of the GSGB, despite some skepticism. Additionally, the OSR recognized the UKGC’s efforts to be transparent about the strengths and limitations of their methodology and statistical approach.
UKGC’s Response to Recommendations
The OSR emphasized the importance of communication and user engagement in the success of the GSGB. Consequently, the UKGC is contemplating the formation of a GSGB Statistics User Group comprising various industry stakeholders to facilitate dialogue, feedback, and shared learning.
In response to the OSR’s recommendations, the UKGC has already made several improvements, including updating the survey improvement plan with additional information for users, designing new survey questions to validate findings against external data sources, and enhancing the accessibility and usability of GSGB outputs.
Furthermore, the UKGC is planning future enhancements such as comparing data with upcoming datasets from the Health Survey for England and the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey, publishing a communication strategy to enhance the dissemination of GSGB updates, and continuing to improve accessibility and usability informed by the GSGB stats user group.
Ben Haden, the director of research and statistics at the UKGC, expressed satisfaction with the OSR’s review, acknowledging the team’s dedication to developing the largest survey of its kind globally. He also welcomed the OSR’s recommendations, which align closely with the UKGC’s ongoing initiatives.

The second annual report of the GSGB is scheduled for publication on October 2, 2025, showcasing the progress and insights gathered from the comprehensive survey.
