VGCCC Reminds State Pubs and Clubs to Comply with Holiday Trading Hours
The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) recently issued a reminder to state pubs and clubs to adhere to holiday trading hours as the Good Friday and ANZAC Day public holidays approach. The reminder emphasized that violators would face fines and other penalties if they fail to comply.
Two Major Holidays Approaching
As Easter and ANZAC Day draw near, the VGCCC warned that it would not tolerate any breaches of trading hours during the holidays. Suzy Neilan, the authority’s new chief executive officer, highlighted that last year, the VGCCC fined 14 venue operators a total of AUD 195,000 for their violations. Additionally, four operators received censure warnings.
The Good Friday, ANZAC Day, and Christmas Day public holidays are significant days where clubs must adhere to additional restrictions. While Neilan acknowledged that some operators may be unaware of the rules, she urged them to familiarize themselves with the requirements.
“With Good Friday almost here, I strongly advise venues to ensure they know, understand, and comply with the obligations of their license and only operate their poker machines during permitted hours,” said Suzy Neilan, CEO of VGCCC.
In August 2024, new laws were implemented in Australia requiring venues to close their poker machine areas between 4 am and 10 am daily.
Previous Fines by VGCCC
The VGCCC previously imposed fines on Melbourne Racing Club amounting to AUD 60,000 for allowing the use of three poker machines before noon on Good Friday. The venues involved were Steeples, The Coach and Horses, and Peninsula Club.
Furthermore, Hoppers Crossing Club Limited was fined $30,000 for breaching restrictions on both Good Friday and ANZAC Day. The Sale & District Greyhound Racing Club received a censure for violating ANZAC Day trading hours.
Neilan explained that before determining penalties, the VGCCC considers the severity of the violation, including the duration customers were allowed to play outside permitted hours, the revenue generated during that time, and the property’s compliance history.

Clubs and pubs are urged to ensure compliance with trading hours during the upcoming holidays to avoid fines and penalties from the VGCCC.
