Warner Bros. Discovery Abandons $8.5 Billion Movie Studio Project in Las Vegas
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) has recently made the decision to scrap its plans to build an $8.5 billion movie studio in Las Vegas. This move comes after the backers of a film tax credit bill have shifted their support to a smaller studio.
WBD’s Ambitious $8.5 Billion Venture
Back in August 2024, WBD had announced its ambitious plan to invest $8.5 billion in leasing and operating a movie studio in Nevada. However, this plan was contingent on the passage of a film tax credit incentive bill that had previously failed to become law.
The initial bill, SB 496, was rejected in June 2023, missing the opportunity to boost the economy in Southern Nevada by allocating more resources to workforce development. As a response to this setback, the bill has been reintroduced as SB 220.
Known as the Nevada Film Infrastructure, Workforce Development, Education, and Economic Diversification Act, the new bill aims to offer $100 million in annual transferable film tax credits for a period of 15 years.
Despite WBD’s optimism in the potential of Nevada, the company has decided to abandon its original plans. As a result, Manhattan Beach Studios has emerged as the new beneficiary of the film tax credits.
Manhattan Beach Studios Takes the Spotlight
Senator Roberta Lange emphasized that Manhattan Beach Studios is dedicated to expanding Nevada’s film industry. In an interview with Casino.org, Lange also mentioned that Warner Bros. had chosen to reassess its location preferences.
Warner Bros. had initially pledged to invest $900 million in constructing a studio and $8.5 billion in production spending over a span of 17 years. However, Bircher Development, the company tasked with building the studio, backed out of the deal earlier this year.
Now, Bircher Development plans to collaborate with Manhattan Beach Studios to construct the new facility, pending the approval of SB 220.
Sony’s Involvement in Nevada’s Film Industry
Aside from Warner Bros. and Manhattan Beach Studios, Sony has also expressed interest in Las Vegas’ movie sector. The entertainment giant is looking to take advantage of tax credits to establish a $1.8 billion studio in Nevada.
Supported by the Clark County Zoning Commission, the project is set to be developed in partnership with the Howard Hughes Corporation, the owner of the land. Under Assembly Bill 238, Sony could receive up to $105 million in tax credits annually for 15 years.
In exchange, Sony has committed to investing a minimum of $400 million in the state. Furthermore, the terms of AB 238 stipulate that Sony must shoot at least half of every film at the Nevada studio and complete each film within 18 months.
Overall, Nevada’s film industry is poised for growth with multiple major studios eyeing the state for their future projects.
